Installation Instructions and Video

Please read all of the following prior to installation.

INSTALLATION TIPS:

Motorcycle Drop Guards must be installed correctly by following all steps listed in the installation tips.  Install and use at your own risks.

Prior to installing, all screws and nuts should be checked to make sure no interference such as metal chrome burrs or powder coat interferes with nut attachment.   The rear drop guard gaskets may have to to be trimmed to ensure no part of the gasket is sticking out once installed.  The gaskets are stamped and sometimes need slight trimming on corners.

The guards should go on easily, if they don't something is and will go wrong (DO NOT CONTINUE WITH INSTALLATION).   Please do not force the drop guards onto the engine guard, saddle bag bars, or primary cover.  The guards should be placed evenly on each side of the motorcycle to ensure proper function and visual appearance.

Impact should occur on the area under and below the strap area of the guards and should not cause damage to the fasteners.

FRONT GUARDS:

Place the guards on the Harley OEM engine guard, and hand tighten the fasteners with even tension until hand tight.  Improperly installing,  Over Tightening, or using the wrong size tools could, and probably will, cause the guards to be installed improperly and will cause screws to strip or possibly break.

Use a correctly sized Allen wrench and a 2nd open ended wrench to evenly tension the fasteners on the drop guards without over tightening.  Torque is only an indirect indication of tension.  Under/over tightening of fasteners can result in costly equipment damage, failure or personal injury.

Ensure the drop guards are attached with all gaskets securely inside the body of the guard.  Gaskets may need to be trimmed to fit if necessary.

Ensure the guard is not loose before each and every ride and after every drop when training.

After the Drop Guards are installed the motorcycle will need to be gently laid on its side to ensure the impact will occur in the correct area of the guards in order to ensure the guards are positioned to protect as intended and without damaging the fasteners.

REAR GUARDS

Place the rear guards on the Harley OEM saddle bag bars, and hand tighten the fasteners with even tension until securely secured.  Improperly installing,  Over Tightening, or using the wrong size tools could, and probably will, cause the guards to be installed improperly and will cause screws to strip or possibly break.

Use a correctly sized Allen wrench and a 2nd open ended wrench to evenly tension the fasteners on the drop guards.  Torque is only an indirect indication of tension.  Under/over tightening of fasteners can result in costly equipment damage, failure or personal injury.

Ensure the drop guards are attached with all gaskets securely inside the body of the guard. The rubber gaskets may need to be trimmed to fit if necessary.

PLEASE REMEMBER: It is recommended to remove all saddle bags while practicing with motorcycle drop guards installed.

After the Drop Guards are installed the motorcycle will need to be gently laid on its side to ensure the impact will occur in the correct area of the guards in order to ensure the guards are positioned to protect as intended and fasteners are not damaged.

Primary Indicator – Please Be Advised

Though the new low profile primary guard has not shown any interference in leans of up 18 feet, please be advised it could, affect the lean limit of the motorcycle as it is an aftermarket accessory.  The primary guard has been used for training students in lean angles prior to reaching the point of contact with the primary.

Though less than 18 foot turns can be made with the primary indicator installed as shown on mutiple videos by trained motorcycle operators, it is highly recommended the primary indicator should be removed when done practicing and prior to riding on the street.  This decision is left to the motorcycle rider/operator.

The MDG Primary Guard will not fit all motorcycles and is made for Harley Davidson Touring Models from 2016, and forward, such as the Road King, Street Glide, Road Glide and other Touring Models of Harley Davidson.  The primary guard is not made for models prior to 2016, as the front and rear drop guards are all that is needed for those year models.

The Primary Guard is included Motorcycle Drop Guard Kit for Harleys.

To install the Primary Indicator remove the 2 bottom screws from the Primary Cover underneath the Derby Cover of the motorcycle, NOT ON THE DERBY COVER.  Improperly installing, over tightening, or using the wrong size tools could, and probably will, cause the guards to be installed improperly and will cause screws to strip or possibly break.

Place the primary guard as to line up with the 2 bottom holes directly under the Derby Cover and the hole at approximately the 5 o'clock position on the PRIMARY COVER.

Install the longer Grade 8 Black Oxide Allen screws into the primary guard and into the primary cover.

Please be advised Grade 8 Oxide Screws are used as Stainless Steel and Cast Aluminum do not play well together.  The grade 8 screws have never been broken after multiple extreme slow moving drops, and that one reason for choice.  Rust will happen, but if that is an issue, oil quenching the screws are an option when done correctly.

Torque is only an indirect indication of tension.  Under/over tightening of fasteners can result in costly equipment damage, failure or personal injury.  The 2 washers included should go onto the included allen screws prior to placing the screws through the holes into the primary lean indicator.

Ensure each fastener is securely and evenly tensioned into the Primary Cover of the motorcycle.  The manufacturer will have recommended torque settings for the screws installed on the motorcycle when manufactured, but may and probably will differ in settings with the included screws used with the Primary Indicator.  (Use at your own risks.)

Ensure the indicator is not loose before each and every ride and inspect after every drop.

Screws should be checked each time after the motorcycle is dropped.  MDG Products recommends that the fasteners  be inspected after each drop, and replaced as determined by the operator to be damaged.

*****After the Drop Guard is installed the motorcycle will need to be gently laid on its side to ensure to ensure the indicator is positioned as intended.

 Please Remember:

If the bike is dropped be sure to always use proper motorcycle lifting techniques to raise the motorcycle back to a standing position and check the functionality of the guards and fasteners.

Fasteners on MDG Products should be checked after each and every drop and every operation of the motorcycle to ensure no damage and proper tension for the riders safety, and the function of the drop guards.

A motorcycle operator should always consult with a professional motorcycle instructor prior to riding a motorcycle and to ensure proper handling of the motorcycle.

INSTALLATION DEMONSTRATION VIDEO

Installation Demonstration Video for INDIAN PURSUITS:

Locktite has not been used in the installation video.

Remember: Motorcycles vibrate and things come loose from vibration, always check tire pressure, and tension of all screws and any and all motorcycle parts as a standard of riding safely,

Please Be Advised:  Be sure not to over tighten drop guards to avoid any type of damage to screws or motorcycle parts.
